Pinchot Tree

On May 5,1910, a ceremony was held dedicating a giant redwood tree in honor of the first chief of the U.S. Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot. This ceremony, organized by the Sierra Club, took place just two years after Muir Woods was made a national monument by the U.S. Government. Gifford Pinchot, a conservationist, lobbied President Roosevelt to accept Kent's gift of Muir Woods in order to save the giant redwood trees for posterity.
