Grove of Sequoia Trees

The Sequoia species is an old one. Fossils of them have been found in rocks 140 million years old. Evolving and spreading around the world, these trees became as common as the pines of today and reached their peak of development more than 50 million years ago. During the Ice Age, their range was greatly reduced. Today only three kinds of sequoia survive: The Giant Sequoias of the Sierra Nevada; the Coast Redwood found along the coast of California and Oregon; and the Dawn Redwood of Central California.
