Burnside Bridge

The Union commanders and General Burnside with his 12,000 Union soldiers were attempting to cross the bridge for three hours. It was a challenge because Brigadier General Robert Toombs and his Confederate soldiers were hidden behind boulders and trees shooting at the Union soldiers as they tried to cross the bridge. Many Union soldiers lost their lives before the bridge was finally crossed.
