The Irish Brigade was formed in 1861 under the leadership of a former Irish Orator
Thomas Francis Meagher. Union soldiers were recruited from New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. In September of 1862 the Brigade formed at the edge of cornfield after crossing Antietam Creek. The Confederate column marched to within 300 paces of the Brigade. The Irish Brigade drew their fixed bayonets and charged forcing the North Carolina Infantry to fall back after a bloody battle. The Irish Brigade fought in many Civil War battles and was highly honored for their bravery.
